PROJECT #91
Project #91 | Education and Skills for Girls in Kenya
Our partnership with Heshima Kenya
Young and unaccompanied refugee girls are among the most vulnerable yet invisible populations in the world, often suffering from the loss of their families as well as traumatic cases of kidnapping, rape, trafficking, and torture. This project directly empowered and advocated for 30 refugee girls and young women in Nairobi, Kenya through the Girls’ Empowerment Project (GEP), an education program that not only teaches basic literacy, but also valuable life skills, vocational training, and financial literacy. They were invited to join a seven-month tailoring course and eventually the Maisha Collective, an entrepreneurship-training program where participants learned how to operate a small business. Through this holistic program, these girls and young women had the opportunity to become change-makers in their communities, reversing the effects of war and poverty.

Meet Jamia
In 2014, Jamia fled to Kenya after her parents were kidnapped by the Ethiopian Government. After being overworked and mistreated as a domestic worker, she was referred to Heshima Kenya.
“At Heshima I stayed in their Safe House until I was secure and stable enough to move back out into the community on my own. They provided me with my basic needs and helped me with my living expenses. In addition, I was enrolled in the Girls’ Empowerment Program at Heshima Kenya where I was given the chance to finish my education. I have been working hard at improving my reading and writing, as well as learning Kiswahili and English. I also began to be trained in tailoring through the Vocational Training Class, and I have gained many useful skills for my future. The supportive staff and educators at Heshima are not only working to provide a bright future for me and many other girls, but they have also become a support system and family to so many of us. I am very grateful for everything I have received in being a part of Heshima Kenya.”
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our girls’ empowerment fund.
