Meet Maria, a mother of two young children who is passionate about caring well for her land. In her Kaqchikel Mayan community in Guatemala, Maria is also known as a dynamic entrepreneur. Through One Day’s Wages’ partnership with Wellkind Guatemala, Maria played a pivotal role in mobilizing women to join artisan cooperatives and savings groups. To further support income generation, Maria received start-up support to launch a cooperative greenhouse that produces and sells seedlings. She now employs ten other Kaqchikel women! Through their efforts, the land surrounding their community now features diverse trees and increased water flow.

Meet Miriamu, a talented farmer and courageous leader of a women’s agricultural cooperative in Dzaleka Refugee Camp. After fleeing her home country and arriving in the refugee camp, Miriamu and her children were entirely dependent on $5/month food vouchers. Through One Day’s Wages’ partnership with SOFERES – a refugee-founded and led organization – Miriamu and other refugee women were able to rent farmland near the camp to grow corn and vegetables. With the money she earned selling produce, Miriamu was able to send her children to school. Now a community leader, Miriamu’s confidence shines brightly amidst an incredibly challenging environment.
