PROJECT #34

Project #34| Economic Empowerment for families affected by HIV/Aids in Zimbabwe

Our partnership with AFCA

ODW partnered with AFCA in order to assist children in Zimbabwe who have been orphaned by the HIV/AIDS crisis. The money raised will provide 77 orphan families (approximately 385 children) with goats, training, support, and oversight.  Goat production plays an important role in Zimbabwe’s agricultural development, as it serves as a means to empower orphaned and HIV/AIDS-affected households, providing quality food and income. AFCA trained families in health care, basic animal husbandry, and nutrition in order to ensure the program was self-sufficient. After three years, orphan families will pass on two female goats to other orphan families, perpetuating the program and extending help to more people.

Meet Gertrude

She is a 76-year-old elderly guardian from the Mayezane area of Zimbabwe. She was once married and had 10 children, but tragically her husband and all her children have passed, leaving her wanting to give up on life. Gertrude says her hope was reborn when she received 2 goats given to the two orphan grandchildren she is looking after. The children she is looking after are Langelihle (aged 12) and Charlton (aged 6). Their father died five years ago and since then, they have always struggled to find food and clothing. They were given two goats and one goat already has a five-month-old healthy kid while the other goat is at an advanced stage of pregnancy.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our job & skills fund.
