Project #327 | Compassionate Maternal & Infant Healthcare in Haiti

Our Partnership with Heartline Haiti

September 2025 – September 2026

As one of the poorest nations in the world, quality healthcare in Haiti is practically nonexistent. For women giving birth, the risks are high: Haitian women face a 1 in 94 chance of dying from complications during pregnancy or childbirth – compare that to 1 in 2,700 in the United States. Intensified political turmoil and gang wars have only made it more difficult for women to receive the maternal healthcare that they need, especially in Haiti’s capital city, Port-au-Prince.

One Day’s Wages partnered with Heartline Haiti for a third year to support high-quality medical care and health education in Port-au-Prince. At the Heartline Maternity Center, women received weekly prenatal check-ups, delivery care, postpartum and early childhood development classes, coaching on nutrition and breastfeeding, homemade meals and a vitamin regimen. Through our partnership, the maternity center was able to continue serving mothers, despite operating in an area with constant threats of violence. Remarkably, Heartline’s Maternity Center continues to have a record of zero infant deaths!

Meet Lenise

“I never thought I’d be pregnant again, especially with everything that’s happening,” Lenise admits. “I already have five children, and I’m barely getting by. But I can’t give up on this one.”

Lenise lives in a neighborhood where gangs hold sway and daily life is precarious. She sells food to support her family, but income has become harder to count on since her husband lost his job amid unrest. With money so tight, her older children cannot afford the university education they’ve worked toward. Like most women in Haiti, Lenise never finished school, and she delivered her earlier children at home with help from neighbors. Her first birth happened on the road while she was trying to reach a clinic. Home births carry real danger in a country where maternal health facilities are scarce and often out of reach.

This time, Lenise chose a different path. She came to the Heartline Maternity Center, where affordable, high-quality care comes with dignity and emotional support. “From the moment I arrived, I felt respected,” she says. “They made me feel like I mattered.” As her due date nears, Lenise looks ahead with determination, ready to give her daughter the best life she can.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots. The projects we support are led by local leaders, and all the funds we raise are through ordinary donors who give a day of their wages to support those experiencing extreme poverty. Will you consider giving $25, $100 or $250 to make our partnerships possible?

One Day’s Wages exists to alleviate extreme poverty by investing in, amplifying, and coming alongside locally led organizations in underserved communities.
