Project #310 | Graduation Approach to Poverty Alleviation in Zambia
Our partnership with Alliance for Children Everywhere
Zambia faces multiple challenges including food insecurity, climate change, and deforestation. These challenges are especially felt by families living in rural communities, over half of whom live under the poverty line. Poverty stems from interrelated factors including reliance on costly imports and exports, unpredictable weather events, poor soil quality, and lack of access to loans. As a result, over 40% of Zambia’s children face at least three hardships: lack of access to education, housing, food, water and/or sanitation resources.
One Day’s Wages partnered with Alliance for Children Everywhere (ACE) to empower impoverished households with vulnerable children to meet their basic needs while improving their long-term financial stability. ACE supported families through food stipends, training and start-up funds to launch small businesses, savings groups, and regular mentorship to support participants’ unique goals. Through our partnership, 80% of households successfully established businesses and most families are now eating more meals a day!
Our Collective Impact
YOUTH STARTED SMALL BUSINESSES TO SUPPORT THEIR FAMILIES
FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE IMPROVED HEALTH AND FINANCIAL STABILITY
Meet Monde
Monde is a model of resilience. At 56 years old, she supported three children and two grandchildren by selling traditional drinks at a small stall. Yet, a difficult divorce and limited education made it difficult for Monde to improve her family’s quality of life.
Today, Monde has transformed her small drink stand into a thriving business. As a dedicated participant in the Graduation Model program, she worked to diversify her income streams and expand her business knowledge. One thing led to another: a popcorn machine allowed her to purchase materials to start a sewing business, which in turn allowed her to purchase chickens and launch a profitable poultry enterprise.
Monde now pays her monthly rent with ease. She recently paid her daughter’s way through university, and is now working to save for her grandchildren’s future. To them, they see a grandmother who exemplifies confidence, determination, and deep care for their family!
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots. The projects we support are led by local leaders, and all the funds we raise are through ordinary donors who give a day of their wages to support those experiencing extreme poverty. Will you consider giving $25, $100 or $250 to make our partnerships possible?
