Our Partnership with Partners in Reproductive Health and Education

In Malawi’s Lilongwe district, estimates show that 37% of the rural population is malnourished, only 34% of girls complete primary education, and 48% of indigenous girls are mothers before their 18th birthday (UNFPA, 2018).  Abject poverty is the main driver of the increased incidence of gender-based violence against rural girls and women. Due to a lack of fertilizer and high-yielding crop varieties, 89% of indigenous rural women who are subsistence farmers do not harvest enough food to meet their families’ nutritional needs. 

One Day’s Wages partnered with Partners in Reproductive Health and Education (PRHE) to improve the economic and nutritional status of rural women and girls in Lilongwe, Malawi through animal husbandry and agricultural training.  Participants were trained in goat raising, entrepreneurship, and cooperative building, and learned to make fertilizer from goat dung to use for improved crop production.  Through our partnership, 4,482 women were trained to raise goats.  Initially, 800 goats were distributed to the first round of families; once those goats reproduced, their kids were passed along to the next round of families.  In this way, 4,482 families were able to receive goats!
