Project #225 | Combating Climate Change and Supporting Farmers in Mozambique
Our Partnership with Tearfund
Around the world, more frequent weather disasters are increasing hunger. In Mozambique, cyclones, which are like hurricanes, are becoming more severe and more common. Irregular rains are also causing both droughts and floods. During drought seasons, the soil and plants become so dry that when it finally rains, they cannot absorb the runoff, which causes floods. Because of these weather patterns, it’s incredibly difficult for even skilled farmers to grow traditional crops in Mozambique. Hunger has become a daily concern and growing enough nutritious food is a challenge for most families in Mozambique.
One Day’s Wages partnered with Tearfund to bring conservation agriculture training, seeds, tools, drip irrigation, and other related programs to family farmers in Mozambique. Tearfund came alongside farmers to adapt to the impacts of climate change, increase food security, generate income, and improve water and sanitation for the communities. Through our partnership, Tearfund trained local trainers who in turn helped to train more farmers in conservation agriculture, drip irrigation, entrepreneurship and business. Farmers also received tools and drought-resilient seeds to grow more diversified and resilient crops. These resources helped farmers market and sell their produce, increasing the economic value of their farming process. WASH techniques and practices were taught throughout the process to increase health and hygiene for farmers and their families. The project has empowered farmers to improve their crop production and well-being, even in the face of a changing climate.

Cyclone Idai ravaged Rabeca Afonso’s community in Mozambique, causing her home to collapse. Through our partner, CEDES, she received emergency food assistance. She has also since repaired her home.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to the fund below.
