PROJECT #191

Project #191 | Clean and Safe Hands in Nicaragua

Our partnership with El Porvenir

El Porvenir committed to meeting the needs of rural Nicaraguans who didn’t have access to hand washing stations in the midst of the Covid-19 crises. El Porvenir originally responded to the needs of the community by increasing communication around hand washing and hygiene education. The next step was to make water and hand washing stations available where there were barriers to regular hand-washing, in order to keep rural Nicaraguans safe and healthy.

One Day’s Wages’ partnership with El Porvenir distributed 1,818 hand washing stations with soap to homes, schools, health posts, and health centers in need. This simple but critical intervention cost only $10 per hand washing station. Working through El Porvenir’s network allowed for a quick response in 6 regions of Nicaragua.

Meet Ana

Ana, one of the many community members who gained access to the hand-washing stations said,

“Before these hand-washing stations, we did not have the education to wash our hands as we should. But now, given the circumstances that are occurring worldwide with the pandemic, we wash our hands more often. The hand-washing station helps us to remember that we have to wash our hands to avoid illness. We take great care of it; at night, we put it in the house so that it is not stolen, and if it is very sunny during the day, we move it from place so that the bucket and lid do not get damaged. We are changing the water daily and cleaning it with soap. We thank you.”

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our emergency relief fund.
