PROJECT #121
Project #121 | Emergency Relief for Refugee Families in Jordan
Our partnership with World Relief
Over 65.6 million people have been forced to flee their homes, communities, and the worlds they know. Nearly a third of these people are formally classified by the United Nations as refugees, more than half are under the age of 18. The Middle East has been particularly strained by the crisis, as over 17 million displaced people have fled from their homelands to neighboring countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
In response, our partnership of World Relief has helped support their Family Strengthening Project, a holistic approach to serving vulnerable Syrian refugees in Jordan that ensures all members of the family have access to support. This model sees individuals within the context of their family and home environments, which play a significant role in people’s psychosocial, educational, and spiritual development. By targeting every member of refugee families through their programs, World Relief desires to see vulnerable refugee families healed, safe, and thriving. The variety of programs offered under the Family Strengthening project allows families to receive support and help as individuals, while also strengthening the family as a unit. These programs include Mothers Groups, where women receive psychosocial support and begin to heal from the trauma they have experienced, Child Friendly Spaces, which are safe spaces where kids can come, play, and learn in a safe environment, a children’s Arabic and English literacy program to provide learning support to children who are struggling to keep up in school, and Literacy Support for adults who are illiterate or lack the pathways to support their children’s learning. Our partner World Relief strategically places itself at the points where refugee families most need help. When families are forced to flee their homes, they work with local partners to provide essential supplies, nutrition and hygiene programs for mothers, safe spaces for children and psychosocial counseling for victims of violence.

Meet a Mothers Group
Through their Mothers Group, Amena, Fathi, Rifat, Reem, and Haya open up and share details of their former life in Syria. One mom discloses that during her first years in Jordan she never left her home and didn’t have a single friend. But through the Mothers Group, she has made friends and specifically, a “best friend” with whom she shares her hopes and dreams. Another mom shares how before she would just stay in the house and feel sad. “I felt tired of living life. I didn’t want to talk to anyone in the house. I had lost interest.” Now their mother group convenes twice a week, creating a safe place for them to share. “We feel relaxed. We feel peace and joy, lots of joy,” one mother says and she chuckles to herself, “I don’t know why we didn’t do something like this before.” We hope that these Mothers Groups will be not just a temporary escape from demanding landlords, dwindling food coupons, and bitterly cold living quarters, but a place to heal.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our refugee relief fund.
