PROJECT #224

Project #224 | Educate to Employ: Computer Labs in Uganda

Our Partnership with Cherish Uganda

The fishing communities in and around Entebbe, Uganda are known not just for fishing tourism, but also for their higher rates of poverty, prostitution, and HIV+ patients. There is a huge need for jobs that honor people’s dignity and bring meaningful income to families. For example, young adults trained in computer coding can earn up to $3 an hour, but most Ugandan students in the public school system do not have the opportunity to learn even basic computer literacy or programming skills.

One Day’s Wages partnered with Cherish Uganda to launch a computer lab and training program for young adults to prepare them for employment. Through our partnership, a computer lab was outfitted with equipment, and 16 young adults and 10 Cherish staff completed an intensive training program. Despite significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, which negatively impacted job availability in the region, 4 graduates have already been able to find new jobs!

Meet Trevor

Trevor is a young man who has studied at Cherish Primary School and Cherish High School since he was young.  Last year, he had the opportunity to participate in Cherish’s brand new Life Skills Computer Program.  Trevor has always excelled academically and is known by his peers as a kind, intelligent, soft-spoken young man.  Trevor was so proud to have graduated from the computer program this year alongside his 15 classmates!

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to the fund below.
