Project #21, 22, 23 | Aid for Communities in the Horn of Africa

Our partnership with Adeso, Concern Worldwide, and World Concern

ODW’s partnership with Adeso, Concern Worldwide, and World Concern provided direct funds to the most vulnerable families in some of the more remote communities of Somalia. These funds helped families purchase desperately needed food and water. This direct response helped keep the families in their communities and it helped save the lives of people that would otherwise not have access to such aid. The crisis in the Horn of Africa was the result of the worst drought in 60 years, coupled with an insecure region due to political, economic and social conflicts; and soaring food prices that have made basic food unaffordable for nearly a third of the population. This placed over 13 million people in need of emergency assistance and forced nearly 600,000 Somalis from their home and into overcrowded refugee camps in search of help.

Meet Suldana

27-year-old Suldana, her husband, and two surviving children were staying in a vacant home that belonged to friends in the town of Dhobley. Having lost a child to diarrheal disease, Suldana was desperately worried about the health of her youngest son and brought him, severely malnourished, to the hospital. A concerned nurse visited their home a few weeks later and found almost nothing but a hollow shell. The family had nothing. Their only belongings, other than a few articles of clothing strung from the mud walls, were the supplies they had received from our partner World Concern – a cooking pot, water jug, sleeping mat, and other necessities. On a fire near the entrance, Suldana was cooking a meal for her family – rice and beans she had also received thanks to our partnership. “I give thanks to those who donated this food, and I pray for them,” she said, looking down at her pregnant belly. Soon, she’ll once again be the mother of three.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our global hunger fund.
