PROJECT #8
Project #8 | Women's Economic Empowerment in the Congo
Our Partnership with HEAL Africa
This partnership with HEAL Africa raised funds for 250 Congolese women to receive Fresh Start Kits. The Fresh Start Kit costs about $100. It provided small-business training and skills, and provided the equipment they needed to go back to their villages and begin supporting themselves. A Fresh Start Kit may have been a sewing machine, money for small trade capital, or a goat or small livestock. The women were involved in all aspects of this project, and the choices they made for their futures.
Many of these women have been victims of gender-based violence as a result of the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has claimed over 5 million lives since 1998. Not only has this dramatically impacted 250 women, but also their children and families.

Meet Manizabayo
She is a 35-year-old mother of 11 children. She lives in a small village in North Kivu named Mweso. Mweso’s population lives on less than $1 a day.
“Two years after my husband was killed by armed men, the nuns at Mweso did awareness raising in our village about Vesico-Vaginale Fistula and I learned that my illness was curable. HEAL Africa took me to Goma where I had two operations that didn’t work, and on the third try, through the grace of God I was healed. During the year I spent at HEAL Africa, I learned a lot about different skills, but especially the training on small family business. And when I left the hospital I received this Startup Kit to help me get started again on a normal life in my village. I now am doing this small business”
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement. Special thanks to [insert name if available].
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our jobs & skills fund.
