PROJECT #112

Project #112 | Empowering Women to Fight Malnutrition in Burkina Faso

Our partnership with Djantoli

Djantoli strives to reduce child mortality in the suburban regions of Ouagadougou. ODW’s support of their nutrition project was oriented toward three major goals: 1) Improving knowledge and habits regarding newborn and young children’s nutrition by engaging families in educational activities using collective games and personalized counseling; 2) Proactively screening for acute malnutrition as well as the treatment and monitoring of malnourished children; and 3) Increasing access to adequate healthcare through supporting first-care health centers and increasing partnership and coordination with local healthcare structures and grassroots community organizations.

Through these interventions, 839 children were able to benefit from nutritional follow-ups and improvements in their hygiene routine, 1,351 nutritional inputs were administered, and 79% of moderated children suffering from malnutrition now have normal brachial perimeters after their follow-ups. In the communities targeted by this project, young children and newborn populations have demonstrated significant improvements in their health, and families and healthcare centers have ameliorated their health behavior. Furthermore, thanks to the personalized follow-ups provided through the home visits conducted by Djantoli’s agents, 34 mothers of diagnosed malnourished children benefitted from extensive guidance and support.

Meet Mrs. Ilboudo

Mrs.Ilboudo subscribed to Djantoli for her little girl, Madina who she leaves at Terre des Hommes nursery before going to work at the quarry. “When I bring my child to the nursery and it is the day of the health visit by the Djantoli agent, I am very happy. The agent weighs my child and tells me if she is growing well. If she has lost weight, she tells me to go and see the nurse at the healthcare center. I know that I can trust Djantoli agents to help me be careful about my child’s health so I am not afraid anymore. I know that my child is going to recover if I go to the health center because Djantoli’s help allows me to pay for the treatment.” Many other mothers have also benefitted from the confidence and security Djantoli’s program gives them just like Mrs. Ilboudo.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our child health fund.
