PROJECT #262
Project #262 | Safe Drinking Water Solutions for Rural Communities in Central America
Our Partnership with EOS International
Over 28 million Central Americans lack safe drinking water. Safe and accessible drinking water is a fundamental human right, yet one of the greatest threats to human health, responsible for over 3.4 million deaths worldwide every year, most of them children. Each year, these deaths could be avoided if the risk factors associated with unsafe drinking water were addressed. Without safe drinking at home, in schools, and in places of work, it is disproportionately harder to lead safe, productive, healthy lives.
One Day’s Wages partnered with EOS International to provide technical assistance, community capacity building, and water quality monitoring across 40 rural communities in Marcala, Honduras. EOS uses a “Circuit Rider” model in which trained water technicians provided monthly support to each community, supporting them to manage their own chlorinated water drinking systems. As a result, 68% of these communities have already learned to independently chlorinate their water. This means much less contamination and instances of water-borne disease for thousands of Hondurans. Through our partnership, 21,229 people now have regular access to safe, clean drinking water!
Our Collective Impact
PEOPLE NOW HAVE ACCESS TO SAFE, CLEAN DRINKING WATER
WATER COMMITTEES HAVE THE CAPACITY TO MANAGE THEIR WATER SYSTEMS
CHLORINATORS INSTALLED ON RURAL COMMUNITY WATER SYSTEMS
Meet Angel
In the community of Piedra Parada, La Paz, more than 50 families have safe drinking water. But this is a very recent change for their community.
The community’s plumber, Mr. Angel Suazo, explains that before they received support from EOS, he did not know how chlorination was done. In fact, he did not realize that his community’s water was contaminated. Years ago, another NGO had attached a chlorinator to their water tank, but nobody in the community knew what it was or how to use it, and there were no technicians in the area to provide technical support.
Upon receiving technical assistance from a Circuit Rider this year, Mr. Angel is thrilled to share that he now understands the importance of chlorination and how the system works. A new chlorinator was installed, and the community of Piedra Parada is now able to access safe water!
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
