PROJECT #237

Project #237 | Water Venture Accelerator for Female Change Agents in Rwanda

Our partnership with Global Grassroots

In post-conflict Rwanda, women and girls still walk an average of nearly 4 miles daily to a contaminated source to collect water. Women have less time to generate income. Girls miss part of the school day, falling behind; many drop out. Women and girls are at risk of assault traveling to remote water sites, and the long duration can trigger domestic violence at home. These challenges, in addition to a myriad of water-borne diseases caused by poor water access exemplify the need for a response that directly meets the challenge with the most effective solution. Women within the community give critical insight on what their communities need but usually have the fewest resources to create change. Global Grassroots’ holistic approach enables women to become mindful leaders of community transformation.

One Day’s Wages partnered with Global Grassroots to invest in the construction of a new water source, increasing access to clean and sustainable water for more than 2,500 people in rural Rwanda while also empowering the venture members to provide critical social impact training. Global Grassroots, together with its female change agents, plans to provide households with training on income generating activities, gender equity, nutrition, and domestic abuse prevention.

Meet Eugenia

Since Eugenia was left widowed as a mother of six, making ends meet has been an immense struggle. Her oldest two children dropped out of school to support the family, which deeply distressed her. Then, the Global Grassroots team witnessed her challenges and intervened with immendiate assistance an while working to support longterm self-sufficiency for Eugenia and her family.

Generating savings and gaining a small loan from her new savings group, Eugenia started her own livestock business with one pig. Her business has since grown and she has 12 pigs that she expects to sell. Eugenia shared how she feels more confident and hopeful about life now. She is particularly thankful that her first two children have returned to school. She says, “I have been able to make money from water delivery because the water source was trusted and near my community. Global Grassroots not only changed my life, but also my entire family. My children are happier and can think, hope, and work towards their future.”

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to the fund below.
