PROJECT #230

Project #230 | Leadership Center for Women and Girls in Rwanda

Our Partnership with Komera

In Rwanda, even if women are educated and employed, they are expected to take on the primary role of taking care of the household and childcare responsibilities.  For this reason, only 18% of businesses in Rwanda are run by women.  There are  limited business and economic opportunities for women and girls, particularly in rural areas.

One Day’s Wages partnered with Komera to construct a Leadership Center for women and girls in Kayonza District, located 2 hours from Rwanda’s capital city, Kigali.  The new center offers space for girls to access skills and information related to language and communication, entrepreneurship, information technology, reproductive health, and protection against gender-based violence.  Our partnership funded the development of an office space that serves as a hub for the Komera team to collaborate and innovate.  Komera broke ground for the center in August 2021 and opened its doors one year later in August 2022.  Within the first 6 months alone, 1,153 students, parents and community members were impacted by the Leadership Center’s classes and services. Komera anticipates reaching over 3,000 people each year!

Meet Olivia

Olivia is a teenage mother who faced extensive stigma when her family found out about her pregnancy.  She tried to escape her reality by experimenting with drugs, and felt little hope for her future.  Thankfully, Olivia was able to join a vocational training program in tailoring for teen mothers at the Komera Leadership Center.  She has gained not only vocational skills to earn income, but also reports gaining soft skills to reconcile with her family.  Olivia is now much more optimistic about her future.  She has created a savings plan for herself, and looks forward to using her savings to one day enroll her child in school.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to the fund below.
