PROJECT #203

Project #203 | Improving Farming Practices in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Our Partnership with Mavuno

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has endured decades of armed conflict and instability, resulting in more than five million deaths. The World Food Program’s 2020 forecast predicted that of the 100 million people in the DRC, 15.6 million would be severely food insecure, making DRC home to the second-largest hunger crisis in the world after Yemen. Mavuno found a direct correlation between high levels of poverty and farmers’ lack of sound, agropastoral knowledge and skills, which was contributing to this hunger crisis.

Farmers were using dated methods that were depleting the soil and causing many to travel long distances or relocate in search of fertile land. These farmers also lacked access to microfinance structures and business skills. A combination of all these factors had destroyed the livelihood of local communities.

One Day’s Wages partnered with Mavuno, an organization that seeks to empower local agripreneurs to ignite economic development, and in turn, to help to build a peaceful and prosperous Congo. This partnership trained farmers in various villages to become certified agripreneurs. These farmers then returned to their own communities to empower more farmers through a condensed version of the agro-pastoral and entrepreneurial skills training which they themselves had received.

Meet Kambale

Kambale couldn’t help but have a big smile on his face when visiting his corn farm! He said it grew way beyond his expectations and that this harvest season was like nothing he had ever seen before in all his time as a young farmer!

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our clean water fund.
