PROJECT #109
Project #109 | Investing in Clean Water for Uganda
Our partnership with The Adventure Project
Our partnership with The Adventure Project was focused in the western region of Uganda in the Kamwenge district, bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Approximately 400,000 people live in this district and poverty is widespread. Many people are refugees fleeing instability in neighboring DRC. When we first began our partnership, only 40% of the population had access to reliable, safe drinking water. Now, it’s grown to over 50%. This project piped safe water to four remote communities in Western Uganda: Bubare, Muragyi A, Muragyi B, and Kabuye. These four communities had never had reliable water systems, leaving many people to resort to drinking from contaminated ponds and streams.
Instead of drilling shallow wells that need constant maintenance and repair, we supported a larger, more sustainable solution. Deep boreholes were drilled, and water is piped directly through a tap stand network, into these four communities. Each piped system reaches at least ten locations throughout these villages. This ensures that the water system will last for generations and people will have drinking water piped near their homes and schools. At each tap stand, a community member is trained and employed to maintain their tap and sell the water at a very affordable price. They also manage the day to day of the public water points. The funds raised will ensure the water system has the funding needed to keep the system working for generations. In addition to kiosks and tap stands, piped systems provide direct water access by pumping water directly into the homes of people in the community. Hundreds have been installed in Kamwenge. This model ensures that schools and health centers, as well as families, no longer need to rely on external organizations for assistance in repairing or replacing their water systems, ensuring they have more reliable access to safe water sources. Our partnership with The Adventure project provided access to safe and reliable drinking water to 323 people in four remote villages in Western Uganda.

Meet Faith
When Faith was a young girl, it was her responsibility to fetch water for her family – but it was from unprotected sources like nearby streams. “We would at times fall sick,” says Faith. “And whenever there were prolonged periods of drought, we would be fatigued from walking long distances.” Now as a great grandmother, Faith was able to install a household water connection as part of the piped water scheme in Kamwenge District, Uganda. Having this household tap has reduced the family’s fear of water-borne diseases and allowed them more time and resources to devote to their small poultry business. In the future they hope to grow a banana plantation, because with their new, reliable water access they would be able to water during the dry season, allowing them to grow year-round.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our water & sanitation fund.
