PROJECT #106

Project #106 | Clean Water and Sanitation for Children in Malawi

Our partnership with Pump Aid

Through this partnership, Pump Aid implemented a project with a goal to improve child well-being aspirations in accessing quality health facilities such as ventilated improved pit latrines, hand-washing facilities, and improved water points. These water access points provide clean and safe water to the children at the community-based childcare centers (CBCCs – basic preschools for kids under 5 years old).

These initiatives have enhanced quality learning environment, which has increased enrollment of children at the CBCCs by an average of 10% so far. WASH facilities, constructed by Pump Aid, in the targeted CBCCs has helped the children under 5, as well as adults, to have increased access to safe, potable water supply and sanitation. The establishment of kitchen gardens has also been influential as the communities are now able to sustain their own operation and maintenance of the infrastructure through sales of vegetables. Access to sanitation and clean water has accelerated the reduction of child morbidity and mortality rates, especially in the communities around the CBCCs. This has resulted in reduced occurrences of water borne diseases among the children. The improved water access points were able to assist this community through taking important preventative measures against illness and through access to better sanitation facilities, thank you Pump Aid!

Meet Mr. Chikumbeni

This is Mr. Chikumbeni, one of four caregivers at the CBCC in the Chikungu village in the Traditional Authority, Mduwa in Mchinjji District. This CBCC has an enrollment of 41 children–15 boys and 26 girls–and four caregivers. Children who attend Chikungu CBCC mainly come from five surrounding villages. At the onset of the project, there was no latrine at the CBCC and that forced the children to go to a nearby bush for open defecation. As a result, there was a great risk of fecal-oral transmission of diarrheal pathogens among the young children attending the CBCC, resulting in high frequencies and risk of disease. During the implementation of the project, Pump Aid supported Chikungu CBCC with: an elephant pump and two VIP latrines, each with two rooms and three hand washing facilities. Currently, the water source is working effectively and is benefiting a total of 41 children under five and 42 households. The hand washing facilities were constructed in order to increase hand washing practices among the children under five so that it can be replicated in their home and many CBCC’s were happy to report that attendance has increased in the CBCC as the children were removed from the risk of illness exposure.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our water & sanitation fund.
