PROJECT #118

Project #118 | Empowering Girls in Afghanistan through Education

Our partnership with Sahar

Our partner, Sahar, works to close the gender gap and get more girls in school by improving Afghan school capacity, training teachers, improving digital literacy, and implementing early marriage prevention programs. Our project with them supported their Early Marriage Prevention Initiative with secondary school aged girls in the Balkh Province. This program helped decrease the instances of student dropouts due to early marriage by teaching girls their rights under the law, empowering them through leadership and self-esteem training, and introducing them to female role models who can inspire their future goals. It also addressed attitudes and perceptions about early marriage among the girls’ families and communities, and encouraged the students to communicate with their parents about the importance of furthering their education. Sahar also worked to learn the most effective interventions for preventing early marriage dropouts, in order to replicate these tools at other schools.

Meet Norzeia

Norzeia is a 9th grade student who graduated from our partner program focusing on human rights and early marriage prevention. “I feel a lot of positive changes in myself since I participate in this program and my self-confidence has increased. I learned very crucial and beneficial things from this program. I am an Afghan girl we have a lot of problems. There is violence against us because our families do not agree for us to go to school. I learned about women’s rights and how violence against women should not be ignored. I learned how women should participate in social, cultural, economic, and political issues. Now the level of my information about women rights has increased. Now I can make decisions in my life and convince my parents not to prevent me from going to school.”

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our girls empowerment fund.
