Project #48 & #60 | Rebuilding Wells and Providing Jobs in Uganda

Our partnership with The Adventure Project

1 out of every 3 wells are broken in Africa. That’s a shocking, and honestly, discouraging stat. Imagine the joy of once having clean water in your village, but now you are trudging back to a river and stream, drinking water that will likely make you and your children sick. This is the reality for 50,000 communities in Africa. Most wells break within the first few years because there are no spare parts, tools or mechanics nearby.

This partnership with TAP had a very large goal: provide 5,750 people in Uganda with clean water by restoring 23 wells and create 46 jobs to ensure the sustainability. We funded part of this pilot project through a $5,000 micro-match grant, so we were really excited to help TAP complete the full project and help spread the idea to other communities.

Meet Ayisha

“Water is life,” says Ayisha, a Water Chairperson from the rural district of Kamwenge. Ayisha was hired as a Water Chairperson through this project. Her job is to make sure people pay their monthly fees for using the water well in their neighborhood, and she also educates her community about why the well will improve their health and benefit their families.

Ayisha says there are a few families who use the nearby swamp instead of the well. The swamp is dirty, smelly, and used by pigs and cows upstream. Ayisha has seen many people become sick from drinking the swamp water, with such diseases as Typhoid. However, now that most use the well she manages, she’s noticed that very few people have become ill.

Ayisha explains that though her job is hard work, she enjoys helping her community. She’s proud of the fact that the community is learning from her. She’s also happy that she can provide clean water for her own family.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement. Special thanks to [insert name if available].

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our clean water fund.
