ODW + UGANDAN WATER PROJECT

Project #264 | Clean Water on School Grounds

Our Partnership with Ugandan Water Project

African children miss 50 million days of school every year due to waterborne illness. Tragically, these illnesses are often contracted in schools that have no clean water for children to drink and no way for children to wash their hands. When schools have no water on-site, students must frequently miss class to fetch highly contaminated water from lakes, rivers, or ditches.

One Day’s Wages partnered with Ugandan Water Project to provide clean water for some of Uganda’s most underserved students.  Rainwater catchment systems, water filters and hand-washing stations were installed at 4 rural schools, reaching 2,073 students and teachers.  Previously, students and staff at these schools had to leave school grounds to collect drinking water, walking for up to two hours in a single trip to reach the nearest water source. Many of these water sources are highly contaminated.  Our partnership resulted in a 100% increase in schools that report their water source now provides enough water to meet daily needs; a reduction in schools’ water-related expenses; and an average increased instruction time of 10.8 hours per day at each school since students no longer have to leave to collect water!

Meet Aisu

Water tanks bring more than water to schools. At Nagalama Parents Primary School, students used to spend long hours fetching water, causing disruptions to their studies. ODW and Ugandan Water Project partnered to install a rainwater collection system, water filters and hand-washing stations at the school. School Director Aisu Kaloli shares that, “These children are no longer going out of the school to go and fetch water at the community borehole. Therefore, it has created a good time for the learners to settle in classes.”

And it’s not just the students who benefit. The kitchen staff and entire school community benefits from improved efficiency, resulting in timely food preparation and seamless school programming.  The school has also experienced financial relief.  Previously, staff had to purchase water at a cost of 2000 UGX per jerrycan. Now, they now access water for free. This financial savings has enabled staff to allocate funds towards other beneficial purposes, positively impacting their welfare and contributing to the school’s overall success and sustainability.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our clean water fund.
