Threads of Change: A Woman’s Bold Business in Post-Pandemic Congo
It is a feat for anyone with limited formal education and no access to capital to launch their own business. But to do so during a global pandemic is truly remarkable. That is the story of Jeannine: an entrepreneur who began selling eco-friendly doormats from recycled fabric in 2021.
To develop her business skills, Jeannine joined a Maarifa cohort of entrepreneurs. Together, they learned how to access capital, diversify their businesses, and showcase their products. After surviving years of discrimination due to a physical disability, Jeannine’s self confidence began to bloom. Her business too began to flourish. Jeannine is now able to provide for her family’s food and education expenses, and support several extended family members.
This year, Jeannine was nominated by her peer entrepreneurs and awarded the first ever Maarifa Award of Excellence! She not only embodies perseverance in the face of many challenges, but also models a business based on giving a second life to fabric scraps that were once considered waste. Jeannine is now recognized by her community for her courage, creativity and commitment to environmental sustainability.
