WHY REFUGEE RELIEF?

Every day, individuals are forced to flee their homes due to armed conflict, violence, persecution, and other crises. Forcibly displaced people include: internally displaced persons who flee their home but do not cross an international border; asylum seekers who flee persecution and seek safe haven in a different country; and refugees who likewise flee persecution and cross an international border, but are granted refugee status by the United Nations or a government.  Displacement brings with it trauma, poor living conditions, barriers to healthcare and food, and prolonged periods of uncertainty regarding legal status.  Throughout displacement, access to basic essentials like food, water, hygiene supplies and healthcare is critical.

• 103 million people worldwide have been forcibly displaced from their homes: 53.2 million internally displaced people; 32.5 million refugees; 4.9 million asylum seekers. 
• 72% of refugees come from just 5 countries: Syria; Venezuela; Ukraine; Afghanistan; South Sudan.  
• 36.5 million forcibly displaced people are children. 
• 76% of refugees are displaced for more than 5 years: lasting on average 20 years for refugees and 10 years for internally displaced people.
• 83% of forcibly displaced people are hosted in low and middle income countries.

OUR RESPONSE

One Day’s Wages comes alongside grassroots partners to improve conditions in resettlement camps, provide medical care, equip families with emergency supplies, and facilitate educational and psychosocial support programs. Since 2009, we have supported 14 refugee relief projects in countries experiencing crisis, impacting over 114,000 people. Through our partnerships, Elizabeth and her children were able to receive medical, food, and educational support upon their arrival at the Bentiu refugee camp, and Wafo was able to transition from working long days in the fields to becoming a seamstress after fleeing Syria.
