Project #12 | Economic Empowerment for Widows in Uganda

Our partnership with United African Orphans and Widows Foundation (UAOWF)

One Day’s Wages’ partnership with UAOWF provided funding to purchase 400 chicks for HIV/AIDS affected communities around Eastern Uganda. All 400 chicks were given to 40 HIV/AIDS widows who then used the birds to acquire profitable skills and gain self-reliance. The HIV/AIDS widows received training in local chicken management and then asked, after their chicken’s first brood, to pass on 10 chicks to a new recipient. The Poultry Project improved nutrition, income, and crop yields by utilizing all aspects of the chickens. The chicken have great nutritional value providing homes with eggs and chicken meat, which can also be sold to generate income to the household. In addition, chicken droppings can be used to fertilize and improve crops.

A Story of Impact

This project managed to drum up support from local leaders right from the village level up to the district. Apart from attending the organized meetings, they also attended the chicken hand over ceremony and pledged full support to the project. 10 women selected among beneficiaries received skills as trainers. These women have already started passing on the knowledge to other women in the community about good poultry management practices.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our jobs and skills fund.
