PROJECT #71

Project #71 | HIV Care for Children in Zambia

Our partnership with Power of Love

Power of Love’s pediatric HIV care program is located in the community of Matero – one of the largest and poorest in Lusaka, Zambia. This community is characterized by a high incidence of HIV and AIDS (prevalence rate of 12% among adults aged 15-49), while having unemployment rates upwards of 60%.

Our partnership with Power of Love took a three-pronged approach, it (1) ensured that no child is born HIV positive, (2) trained family members in caring for HIV positive children, and (3) provided comprehensive care to HIV infected children so they can live healthy and productive lives. This program provided children with food, medicines, weekly health check-ups, psycho-social counseling, adherence to medication training and monitoring, and education on prevention of HIV. As a result of improved health, the children were be able to attend school, while the other community members benefitted from improved knowledge of HIV care and prevention.

Meet Mary

Mary is three years old and the youngest of six siblings. She was enrolled in 2012 when she was nine months old, at the recommendation of her Church. She is HIV+ but is not on ARV medication as her CD4 count is high. In April 2014, Mary had typhoid and was admitted to the clinic for five days. She was treated and is now better. At this time Mary’s health is stable, she has no major illness and is an active child. She will join school when she turns five. *name and picture changed

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our preventable disease fund.
