Project #326 | Empowering Vulnerable Students at Same Learning Center

Our partnership with Empower Tanzania

Tanzania has a young population, with 77% of people under the age of 35. Young people are eager to learn and contribute to the local economy; however, the secondary school enrollment rate in Tanzania’s rural areas is just 31%. Tanzanian students face a unique challenge as the language of instruction shifts from Kiswahili to English in secondary school.  Students experiencing deprivation of basic needs like adequate food, housing, and finances for school supplies are most likely to drop out, limiting their opportunities for meaningful work long term.

One Day’s Wages partnered with Empower Tanzania to support vulnerable students at the Same Learning Center.  Students were selected in partnership with Same District primary schools based on multiple vulnerabilities, including those living in child-headed households and those without adequate food or housing. Students came to the learning center after school for tutoring, and on Saturdays for life skills training along with a nutritious meal.  Each child also received a school uniform, school supplies, daily school lunches, and a monthly hygiene kit. For the eighth year in a row, 100% of participants were able to successfully qualify for secondary school thanks to the support they received at the Same Learning Center!

Children’s Council

In December 2024, students from the Same Learning Center (SLC) were chosen to represent Same District at the inaugural Regional Children’s Council! Children from across the Kilimanjaro Region gathered in Moshi to share their learnings.

This year, SLC students are also participating in a regional Day of the African Child celebration where they will share their perspectives on inclusive education. These events offer SLC students meaningful opportunities to speak, learn, and grow in confidence.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots. The projects we support are led by local leaders, and all the funds we raise are through ordinary donors who give a day of their wages to support those experiencing extreme poverty. Will you consider giving $25, $100 or $250 to make our partnerships possible?

One Day’s Wages exists to alleviate extreme poverty by investing in, amplifying, and coming alongside locally led organizations in underserved communities.
