Project #305 | Integrated Women's Empowerment Project

Our partnership with Sustainable Investments and Development Initiative

In Tanzania, nearly 45% of people live under the poverty line. The majority depend on farming for food and income, which makes agricultural growth key to poverty reduction. But the effects of climate change are restricting growth in this sector. For example, fishing in Lake Victoria is a primary source of income for many families. However, recent studies reveal that over three-quarters of the lake’s native freshwater species are at risk of extinction due to climate change, overfishing, and unrestricted development. Food sources and livelihoods are threatened when the community cannot depend on a consistent supply of fish.

One Day’s Wages partnered with Sustainable Investments and Development Initiatives (SIDI) to increase food security and income among fisherwomen in Sengerema District. The project leveraged women’s expertise in fishing while supporting them to adapt their knowledge to climate-smart methods of production. Community members contributed their time and skills to construct six fish ponds.  The 93 women selected as participants learned to manage the ponds, harvest fish at regular intervals, sell at local markets, and plant fruit trees and vegetables near the ponds as an additional source of food and income. As a result, the women have on average doubled their earnings, and 95% report improved living conditions for their families!

Meet Tatu

A widow with three children, Tatu relies on fishing and primitive farming to feed her family. However, her land has been ravaged by drought in recent years. Life became even more difficult for her family.

This year, Tatu had the opportunity to learn about aquaculture and vegetable farming through SIDI. She is now able to sell vegetables and surplus fish. With this added income, Tatu was able to purchase health insurance for her family. She is also teaching another farmer to raise fish and vegetables.

Tatu shares,

“Now I have a lot of knowledge to tackle poverty.”

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots. The projects we support are led by local leaders, and all the funds we raise are through ordinary donors who give a day of their wages to support those experiencing extreme poverty. Will you consider giving $25, $100 or $250 to make our partnerships possible?

One Day’s Wages exists to alleviate extreme poverty by investing in, amplifying, and coming alongside locally led organizations in underserved communities.
