ODW + PLANTING SEEDS
Project #303 | Building Strong Foundations in Guatemala City
Our partnership with Planting Seeds International
During the Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996), over 10,000 families were displaced from their indigenous communities and sought refuge in Guatemala City. Living near the city’s hazardous landfill, these communities face lingering trauma, marginalization, and financial stress, all which perpetuate ongoing violence, alcoholism, and drug use. Community-led interventions are needed to strengthen peace-building and address generational cycles of poverty.
One Day’s Wages partnered with Planting Seeds International to support community members’ quality of life and ability to flourish. Through our partnership, PSI expanded the programs offered at their newly-constructed Community Center in Zone 3. Programs include women’s and girls’ groups to discuss reproductive health and gender equality; men’s groups to reflect on parenting styles and being engaged role models; and boys’ groups to learn about self-esteem and teamwork. Community members also gained employment skills, mentorship, and English language classes that contribute to job readiness. Even in the face of increased gang violence in Zone 3 this year, girls are better able to regulate their emotions; fathers have begun expressing themselves; women are better able to advocate for themselves; and children with autism who are part of the early childhood education program have improved communication skills!

Meet Vivian
As a community leader for many years, Vivian was able to hone her skills and gain a broader perspective through her work as a facilitator at the Community Center this year. For example, she was able to participate in a workshop on setting healthy boundaries and using her voice to express her ideas.
“Working at the Community Center feels like being in my second home. Here, I am constantly learning, but I also have the opportunity to guide others. I feel that I now have more empathy, I listen more attentively to others, and I can better identify where I can be most helpful.”
“The biggest change I see is within the women’s group and the children I work with. I notice that we listen to and communicate with each other more respectfully. I see new friendships forming and a greater sense of harmony among everyone. I like to think I’ve been a part of that transformation.”
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots. The projects we support are led by local leaders, and all the funds we raise are through ordinary donors who give a day of their wages to support those experiencing extreme poverty. Will you consider giving $25, $100 or $250 to make our partnerships possible?
