PROJECT #303

Project #303 | Building Strong Foundations in Guatemala City

Our partnership with Planting Seeds International

During the Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996), over 10,000 families were displaced from their indigenous communities and sought refuge in Guatemala City. Living near the city’s hazardous landfill, these communities face lingering trauma, marginalization, and financial stress, all which perpetuate ongoing violence, alcoholism, and drug use. Community-led interventions are needed to strengthen peace-building and address generational cycles of poverty.

One Day’s Wages is partnering with Planting Seeds International to support community members’ quality of life and ability to flourish. Through our partnership, PSI is expanding the programs offered at their newly-constructed Community Center in Zone 3. Programs include women’s and girls’ groups to discuss reproductive health and gender equality; men’s groups to reflect on parenting styles and being engaged role models; and boys’ groups o learn about self-esteem and teamwork. Through the center, community members will also gain employment skills, mentorship and English language classes that contribute to job readiness.  In addition, the center offers health and fitness classes that support community wellness.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots. The projects we support are led by local leaders, and all the funds we raise are through ordinary donors who give a day of their wages to support those experiencing extreme poverty. Will you consider giving $25, $100 or $250 to make our partnerships possible?

One Day’s Wages exists to alleviate extreme poverty by investing in, amplifying, and coming alongside locally led organizations in underserved communities.
