ODW + MOTHER'S HEART
Project #298 | Crisis Pregnancy Support for Vulnerable Women
Our partnership with Mother’s Heart Organization
Discrimination against single, pregnant women is very common in Cambodia. They are considered “disgraced, bad luck, used and unworthy.” This stigma compels many girls and women – many of whom are survivors of sexual violence – to keep their pregnancy secret and refrain from seeking health services for fear of being shamed in public. Without access to health care, infant and maternal mortality rates soar. Social isolation also leaves girls vulnerable to dropping out of school, abandoning their children, and being preyed on by traffickers.
One Day’s Wages partnered with Mother’s Heart Organization to support women and girls experiencing a crisis pregnancy. Clients received counseling to heal from past trauma, build healthy and supportive relational networks, and when appropriate, reunite with their families. Our partnership supported the cost of prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care, and women received additional support as needed for newborn clothing, food stipends, rental assistance, and hygiene kits. For those seeking to build livelihoods skills to provide for their newborns, social workers matched clients with a vocational training course of their choosing, or with support to start a small business. As a result, 0% of babies born during the program period were underweight or malnourished, and 94% are being cared for within their immediate or extended families, while 6% are cared for by foster families.

Meet Somanea
When Somanea (not her real name) arrived at Mother’s Heart, the trauma from her abusive relationships deeply affected her mental health, leaving her struggling with severe emotional distress and unpredictable outbursts. Having been abandoned, Somanea was pregnant with no one to turn to except her ailing mother. The Mother’s Heart team assessed her situation and addressed her immediate needs: maternal healthcare, mental health support, and a safe place for her and her unborn child. A diagnosis led to a course of medication and regular hospital check-ups.
Somanea’s road to recovery was far from easy. She struggled with the side effects of medication and the overwhelming responsibility of caring for a newborn. The Mother’s Heart social worker and midwife worked patiently alongside Somanea and her mother to navigate the complexities of mental health intertwined with pregnancy. Through consistent care and support, Somanea’s symptoms became more manageable, and she began taking small daily steps to care for herself and her baby. In collaboration with local partners, they are now exploring options for Somanea’s mother to earn income so that the family can continue their healing journey together.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots. The projects we support are led by local leaders, and all the funds we raise are through ordinary donors who give a day of their wages to support those experiencing extreme poverty. Will you consider giving $25, $100 or $250 to make our partnerships possible?
