PROJECT #296

Project #296 | Toilet Construction at Nsawkaw Primary School

Our partnership with Heritage Charity Foundation

According to Ghana’s 2021 Population and Housing Census, 17.7% of households do not have access to a toilet, and 31.3% of people in rural areas practice open defecation.  Access to toilets and sanitation services in Sunyani Municipality (the project area) is particularly low, with 47.1% of the total population having no access to a toilet.  Lack of access to hygienic toilets, including toilets at schools, has a tremendous impact on children and contributes to low school attendance and high drop-out rates.  In addition, poor sanitation and hygiene practices result in frequent outbreaks of cholera and communicable diseases.

One Day’s Wages partnered with Heritage Charity Foundation – a community-based organization in Ghana – to construct a hygienic, 5-seater micro flush toilet at Nsawkaw MA Basic Junior High School, located in a rural village outside Nsuatre.  Micro-flush toilets use minimal amounts of grey water (from hand washing) to flush, saving significant water. After completing construction, officials from the community provided a training session on hygiene and sanitation to the students.  Through our partnership, 300 students now have access to a safe and clean toilet at school!

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots. The projects we support are led by local leaders, and all the funds we raise are through ordinary donors who give a day of their wages to support those experiencing extreme poverty. Will you consider giving $25, $100 or $250 to make our partnerships possible?

One Day’s Wages exists to alleviate extreme poverty by investing in, amplifying, and coming alongside locally led organizations in underserved communities.
