ODW + Mavuno

Project #291 | Maarifa Learning Academy and English Language Pogram

Our Partnership with Mavuno/Maarifa

While the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) boasts a wealth of natural resources, 62% of Congolese live below the poverty line and the country has suffered decades of political instability. High unemployment rates fuel conflict and contribute to regional insecurities, with youth frequently targeted by militia group recruiters.  In 2022, the DRC joined the East African Community, providing new economic incentives and unrestricted trade across borders.  This is encouraging news for young entrepreneurs who operate small informal businesses.  However, a majority have no access to formal credit, business training opportunities, and the necessary English and computer skills.

One Day’s Wages partnered with Mavuno to expand and deepen the impact of the Maarifa Learning Academy: an intensive training program in North Kivu province for small business owners.  Through our partnership, 200 entrepreneurs gained increased knowledge and skills in business planning, financial literacy, computers, and English. In addition, Maarifa hosted business expos for entrepreneurs to promote their products, and networking events for the broader community.  As a result of participating in the Maarifa Learning Academy, 67 entrepreneurs improved their English skills, 76 secured small business loans from partner financial institutes, and the 200 trained entrepreneurs were able to provide jobs for another 400 youth as they expanded and diversified their businesses!

Meet Jeannine

It is a feat for anyone with limited formal education and no access to capital to launch their own business. But to do so during a global pandemic is truly remarkable. That is the story of Jeannine: an entrepreneur who began selling eco-friendly doormats from recycled fabric in 2021.

To develop her business skills, Jeannine joined a Maarifa cohort of entrepreneurs. Together, they learned how to access capital, diversify their businesses, and showcase their products. After surviving years of discrimination due to a physical disability, Jeannine’s self confidence began to bloom. Her business too began to flourish. Jeannine is now able to provide for her family’s food and education expenses, and support several extended family members.

This year, Jeannine was nominated by her peer entrepreneurs and awarded the first ever Maarifa Award of Excellence! She not only embodies perseverance in the face of many challenges, but also models a business based on giving a second life to fabric scraps that were once considered waste. Jeannine is now recognized by her community for her courage, creativity and commitment to environmental sustainability.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots. The projects we support are led by local leaders, and all the funds we raise are through ordinary donors who give a day of their wages to support those experiencing extreme poverty. Will you consider giving $25, $100 or $250 to make our partnerships possible?

One Day’s Wages exists to alleviate extreme poverty by investing in, amplifying, and coming alongside locally led organizations in underserved communities.
