Project #249 | Healing & Justice for Child Victims of Sexual Violence
Our Partnership with A Breeze of Hope
Bolivia has the highest rates of sexual violence against women and girls in South America. In partnership with Bolivia’s Ministry of Health, A Breeze of Hope conducted research that revealed 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys are sexually abused before age 18. What’s more, Bolivia’s Human Rights Defense Agency reported that 7 in 10 women suffer sexual violence during their lifetime, and less than 2% of persons charged with sexual offenses are convicted. Poverty, a collapsed and underfunded judicial system, endemic corruption, and cultural trends that romanticize gender-based violence all conspire to produce a social context that suppresses girls’ voices, making it extremely difficult to seek justice and professional services.
One Day’s Wages partnered with A Breeze of Hope to provide free therapeutic support, legal advocacy, and vocational training to child survivors of sexual violence in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Through our partnership, A Breeze of Hope was able to continue providing wrap-around professional services to child survivors at the only specialized center in Cochabamba.

Meet Anai
Anai’s mother abandoned her to protect her stepfather the man who raped Anai during most of her childhood. Anai decided to receive vocational training and to receive mental healing at A Breeze of Hope’s center, Filomena, one of the vocational training facilitators brought her under her wing. With Filomena’s guidance, Anai is learning how to take the tattered scraps of her difficult past (…the pain, the wounds, the betrayal, the violence…) and create a beautiful quilt that gives warmth and joy to everyone around.
Without surprise, Anai is excelling in her sewing classes. She has already learned how to make various clothing items, purses and pouches, and handbags. She enjoys sewing because, as she says, “I’m able to express my creativity and make things that are useful.” In January 2022, our attorneys worked with the District Attorney to prosecute Anai’s aggressor. The Court found him guilty of the rape of a minor and sentenced him to 25 years in prison without parole. ODW has made it possible for Anai and other girls to access healing and justice.
