Our Partnership with Alliance for Children Everywhere

Out of 24.3 million people in Zambia, 57.5% earn less than the international poverty line of $1.90 per day. In 2020, the UN reported that 19% of women have an unmet need for family planning and 34% of children under age five experience moderate to severe stunting from malnutrition. Only 40.3% of Zambian women report having an account at a financial institution, and 45.9% of report experiencing gender-based violence.

Through our partnership with Alliance for Children Everywhere, 314 Zambian women had the opportunity to graduate from extreme poverty to self sufficiency.  Alliance for Children Everywhere’s “Graduation Approach” included: coaching and mentorship, integration into a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA), asset transfers for income generating activities, and referrals to support services.  As a result, 77% of women were able to start an informal business, and 3% have been able to formally register their business.  The project has also significantly improved vulnerable families’ food security.  Before the intervention, a majority of families regularly went more than a day without food at a time.  Now, 58% are eating 2 meals a day and another 37% are eating 3 meals a day!
