PROJECT #235
Project #235 | Volcano Response for Students and their Families in DRC
Our Partnership with Justice Rising
In May of 2021, an active volcano outside the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo erupted and left hundreds of thousands of people displaced. The eruption of Mount Nyiragongo leveled 17 villages and destroyed more than 5,000 homes. The government ordered the evacuation of 10 neighborhoods in Goma to protect against further eruptions. As people streamed out of the city, 1,500 displaced people arrived at two Justice Rising schools just outside the evacuation zone. Justice Rising decided to re-open these schools as temporary shelters and was able to provide access to clean water, food and sanitation facilities to prevent the spread of diseases. However, months later, there was still a huge need to support displaced families, especially as food prices soared.
One Day’s Wages partnered with Justice Rising to provide food and water for hundreds of families still struggling after being displaced by the volcano. This partnership allowed Justice Rising to provide materials to rebuild homes to 600 families, supplies for 255 students to attend school, emergency food for 1,434 people, and hygiene kits for 1,503 people. Students and teachers shared that they were inspired to know that they were not forgotten and not facing their challenges alone.

Meet Excellence
“My name is Excellence and I am in the 5th grade. When the volcano erupted, it destroyed our school & our farms. Everything was destroyed. My life has since been changed because they have constructed a new place for us to study. This is important because what we learn at school makes us more intelligent.”
Through our partnership with Justice Rising, they were able to distribute materials to Excellence and his family so he could continue his education. He received a uniform, books, pens and pencils, a backpack, and a small food supply.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our emergency relief fund.
