PROJECT #232

Project #232 | Improved Health and Hygiene at Ugandan IDP Settlement

Our Partnership with Drink Local Drink Tap

In Uganda, settlements for internally displaced people (IDPs) are often overcrowded with limited sanitation facilities, enabling diarrheal diseases to spread quickly. Women are especially vulnerable here, as entering the bush to handle their hygiene leaves them at risk of sexual violence.

One Day’s Wages partnered with Drink Local Drink Tap to bring increased access to sustainable water and sanitization facilities to the people of the Bukompe IDP settlement in Uganda. Two latrine facilities with private bathing areas were constructed, giving safe and accessible facilities for over 2,000 people.  With nearby sanitation facilities, women now have more time to focus on income-generating activities or education. Community members were trained to maintain the latrines and will contribute direct costs for annual upkeep.

Meet Christopher

Christopher is a longtime friend to Drink Local Drink Tap and has always shown himself as a community leader. To see the last phase of his community’s WASH projects open, shocked him. “I didn’t think this could ever happen to me and my family. We have nothing, everything was lost, but now I have hope. Many people say they will help and never come back. Drink Local Drink Tap never forgot about us. You are true friends and now my children are safe.”

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our clean water fund.
