PROJECT #201

Project #201 | Protecting Refugees in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh

Our partnership with Tearfund

In the world’s largest refugee settlement at Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, there are nearly a million Rohingya refugees living in abject poverty and overcrowded makeshift camps. In addition to horrible weather conditions, COVID-19 increases the immediate need for help. The refugee settlements are in such poor conditions, threatening the livelihoods of all that reside there.

One Day’s Wages is partnered with Tearfund to help people in the most vulnerable communities to stay one step ahead of the COVID-19 outbreak. Their work focused on awareness-raising and coronavirus prevention by: sharing life-saving health information about social distancing, handwashing, and other prevention methods, distributing sanitation kits with soap, masks, and bleaching powder, and providing emergency food and nutrition assistance for the most vulnerable. Through this partnership, they will be meeting the needs of the people who are most vulnerable during health emergencies, such as people with disabilities, women-headed households, ethnic minorities, transgender individuals, day laborers, and people who rely on others for their basic needs. Even before the first case was detected, Tearfund has been working with its partners to respond to the crisis and has a long-standing history in Bangladesh.

Meet Fatima

Fatima* is only 12, but she has already endured traumas many of us can only begin to imagine. Militants came to Fatima’s village and burned down her childhood home. When she tried to escape with her family, the militants killed her two brothers. Fatima is one of the thousands of children living in a refugee camp in Bangladesh, surviving in extremely basic conditions. In recent years, more than 911,000 people fled violence in Myanmar.

Life in the camp is extremely difficult for Fatima and her family. When the Pandemic hit, health concerns added to these difficulties. But, for children like Fatima who have already suffered devastating losses, visiting Tearfund’s child-friendly space offers a safe environment for moments of joy, comfort, and hope. This space provides a small piece of normality and some education amidst a world full of uncertainty, giving children like Fatima the possibility of a brighter future.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to the fund below.
