PROJECT #187

Project #187 | Accessible Public Health Information and Hand washing Stations in Kenya

Our partnership with Imarisha

Despite an impressive economic growth since 2005, poverty still affects millions of lives in Kenya and inequality is rampant. COVID-19 is causing severe economic impact, as 80% of all employment in Kenya is within the informal sector. This means that a majority of Kenyans depend on daily sales in order to make a living. The majority of Kenyans cannot afford to stay or work from home without risk of starvation. This, coupled with inadequate sensitisation in rural and informal settings, means that COVID-19 places a disproportionate burden on those who are poor and marginalized. This is especially the case in densely populated urban areas with limited opportunities for social distancing, poor systems to support hygiene and sanitation, and few health care facilities that can provide respiratory support.

Through our partnership with Imarisha, to ensure the team was protected, the organization procured branded PPEs for her 11-member team of volunteers and staff. The youth volunteer teams accompanied by staff visited several government agencies and officials and laid a work plan to ensure a wide reach with limited timelines. The organization installed 20 innovative hand washing stations at bus parks and other conspicuous places. The public education team strived to ensure that community-based interventions such as social distancing and working from home were observed to help slow the spread of the virus.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our clean water fund.
