PROJECT #192

Project #192 | Life-Saving Food and Medical Care for Survivors of Trafficking

Our partnership with Willow International

Willow international is an anti-trafficking organization which focuses on government reform, survivor aftercare, and connecting with global partners for cohesive response efforts. Their work to end human trafficking is centered in Uganda, where the government issued a strict shelter-in-place order due to the COVID-19 crisis. The borders were closed, public and private transportation was banned, and all non-essential businesses were shut down. While effectively working to hamper the spread of COVID-19, the shelter-in-place order had drastic economic impact on the country’s most vulnerable – specifically survivors of human trafficking. Most of Willow’s graduates and survivors in our care were unable to work and were struggling to afford food, medical care, and other essentials.

One Day’s Wages partnered with Willow International to provide emergency intervention for survivors of human trafficking. The survivors were provided with emergency food, water, medical, and basic goods during the peak of the Pandemic in Uganda. Willow international also provided resources to two local shelters who safely housed survivors of human trafficking. Survivors were also supported through mental health counseling online and via phone.

Remarkable Rachel

*Due to the confidentiality of work, Willow International & One Days Wages cannot share names and photos of survivors. Names have been changed and photos of shareable content is provided*

Rachel is a single mother of three young children who also acts as the primary caregiver to her mother who is HIV positive. Rachel is a survivor of human trafficking and thanks to the support of Willow International’s aftercare shelter program she was able to transition back into her community. Amidst the COVID-19 outbreak, Rachel was very anxious about how she would be able to provide for her family because she was not able to work, leaving their family without adequate resources to pay their rent and food. Willow International was able to provide rent assistance for three months, as well as monthly emergency assistance since April. Her case manager also provided continual emotional and psychosocial support over the phone. Rachel conveyed that she is grateful for the financial and emotional support she received throughout this challenging time

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our emergency relief fund.
