PROJECT #190

Project #190 | Essential Food and Hygiene Supplies in Guatemala

Our partnership with Mil Milagros

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the Guatemalan government closed schools and non-essential business, suspended public transport, significantly reduced market hours, and enforced a strict curfew. While these measures were important to stop the spread of the virus, many Guatemalans are day workers who could not get paid their salaries if they did not work. This problem was exacerbated in our rural partner communities, where the majority of families already lived in poverty. Job insecurity and restrictions on movement reduced food security in communities where up to 70% of children were already malnourished. ‍In the best of times, it is difficult for these families to put food on the table.

One Day’s Wages partnership with Mil Milagros provided emergency aid to over 8,000 Guatemalans who were struggling to make ends meet during the COVID-19 crisis. Mil Milagros  provided emergency food and essential hygiene supplies to all 1,605 children in their partner communities. They also worked to modify the educational components of their programs so that community members could receive all of their information digitally. Additionally, Mil Milagros staff produced and shared a video explaining COVID-19 in K’iche’, the native language in the partner communities.

Meet Betzy

Betzy is 6-years old and lives in one of Mil Milagros partner communities. Betzy’s mother, Dalila, said Betzy gets very excited when the deliveries are made in her community. She looks forward to receiving bananas because she knows they are healthy and delicious. She says, “Thanks to Mil Milagros, I am going to grow!” Dalila is a single mother of two girls and is incredibly grateful for the food and hygiene supplies she has received this year. There are more than 1,600 children just like Betzy in her community who depended on these supplies to help them stay healthy and strong. With many parents struggling to make ends meet, the delivery of these nutritious supplies provided much needed relief.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our emergency relief fund.
