PROJECT #185
Project #185 | Immediate Food Assistance in Kyrgyzstan
Our partnership with Crosslink Development International
One Day’s Wages partnered with Crosslink Development International (CDI) to respond to the immediate needs of the Kyrgyz people as the COVID-19 government shutdown disrupted their daily livelihood and well-being. Since many Kyrgyzstanis work as day laborers and don’t have a buffer for expenses, the shutdown of the economy had dire consequences. Transportation was severely restricted so any citizens with mobility issues had physical difficulty procuring necessities. The elderly and marginalized in remote areas were disproportionately affected by these guidelines as they could not go to the local markets and other vendors that would normally be their cheapest option for food and other staples.
Our partnership distributed 7,038 food packets–each containing enough food for one family for a week–to provide direct relief for vulnerable community members during COVID-19. The packets reached over 4,000 families, providing 23,505 people with 10 weeks of food aid thanks to 3,010 hours of volunteer time.

Heart warming connection
This widower lives with two of her children and five grandchildren, who was dependent on a small pension and earnings from her kids’ day-labor jobs to sustain their family prior to the uproar of COVID-19 in their community. When her children lost their income due to the pandemic restrictions, she expressed that she had no idea how they were going to survive because her pension could not provide enough food for all of them. Working through the local neighborhood “overseer” (dom kom), CDI volunteers learned of her difficult situation to her great surprise, arrived uninvited and unannounced promising to provide weekly food for the next eight weeks. Despite printed health information and attempts to explain and enforce social distancing, she could not respond other than with hugs and kisses of gratitude. While CDI primarily focuses on sustainable development projects, thanks to the generosity of One Day’s Wage and other donors, CDI volunteers were able to provide the essentials to help these wonderful families through such a difficult time.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our emergency relief fund.
