PROJECT #167

Project #167 | Increasing Maternal and Newborn Health In Nicaragua

Our partnership with Clinica Verde

Nicaragua has one of the higher end rates of adolescent pregnancy in Latin America. Over the last few years, Nicaragua has faced adversity resulting in devastating civil & political unrest, violence, and a staggering decline in their economy. This has resulted in both a weakened public health care system and an increased demand for equitable health services. Clinica Verde has remained a consistent resource for pregnant women and their families in their community.

Our partnership with Clinica Verde extended their Maternal and Child Well-Being Program to the Boaco, Nicaragua region. This program aims to educate young mothers on self care throughout the critical months of pregnancy. Over a 10-week period women can access free gynecological care, discounts and donations on medications, seeds for a home garden, education on how to prepare healthy meals, and additional training towards fortifying their health and nutrition. These women serve as emotional support to one another, promoting both empowerment and pride in their roles throughout motherhood.

Meet Erika

Erika was a first time mother when she joined the group of pregnant women at the El Papayal Maternity Home. Much of her time was spent reading the project manual, which she calls “the little book.” She said, “It is loaded with a lot of information and good advice,” she said. “What has interested me the most about this project is how it explains to us the growth of our baby, every month, and the changes that mothers experience –especially since everything is new for those of us who will be mothers for the first time.” For Erika, the information is not the only important element of the project. She adds: “The program gives us security and makes us feel that we are important – that our baby is not only special for us but for everyone who is in the program.” With her baby in her arms, Erika shares with all the women in her community the importance of pre-birth care and breastfeeding. “It is something that only a mother can feel and I feel that I am protecting my baby. I know that exclusive breastfeeding is the best thing I can do for her. I thank the project for helping us better understand motherhood and the great responsibility that lies in our hands.”

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our maternal health fund.
