PROJECT #15

Project #16 | Children's Primary Health Care in Mali

Our partnership with Mali Health

ODW’s grant to MHOP funded their “Action for Health” program. This unique, community-led initiative enrolled the poorest families in Sikoro in a comprehensive primary care program for children. This program reached 824 people, including roughly 800 children under the age of 5. MHOP plans to expand the Action for Health program to reach 57,600 indigent people by 2015.

The objectives of this program included: increasing child survival and pre-natal care, fostering community investment in health, increasing community capacity to respond to evolving health needs, and presenting an alternative model to user fees. The Sikoro-based pilot of Action for Health will be evaluated and revised to create a replicable model of health care financing for peri-urban communities across West Africa.

Meet Keita

“After spending a long and restless night with my son, I quickly took a loan of 10,000 CFA (approx. $16-17) to bring him to the health center. This amount, though small, could be enough to save [my son] from malaria. We live in a suburban settlement area where the houses are surrounded by crops – something that increases the possibility of contracting malaria during the winter. A big thank you to the health fund and the members of my group for this gesture of solidarity.”

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our children’s health fund.
