PROJECT #1

Project #1 | Increase Access to Education in Thailand

Our partnership with Burmese Migrant Workers Education Committee

Burmese Migrant Workers Education Committee (BMWEC) is an umbrella organisation of 45 schools. ODW’s grant to BMWEC was used to provide transportation for 18 months and directly enabled access to education for many students.

Hsa Mu Thaw school had 203 students and 13 teachers (10 classes). Many students needed to be transported to this school as it is on the outskirts of Mae Sot. To do this, the school hired a van and driver to bring the children to school and take them home again each day. Providing reliable transportation ensured that children living far away from the school would be able to safely make it to and from their classes. ODW’s grant to BMWEC was used to provide transportation for 18 months and directly enabled access to education for many students.

Meet a Local Student

“I am a student who is learning education at grade 6 in Hsa Mu Htaw School. My age is 12. The distance between the school and my house was two miles. I had to go to school and come back from the school [for] food every day without transportation. The school gave us knowledge of English skills and computer skills, and the teachers behaved as role models for us also. My parents already heard about the difficulty of transportation in previous years. When my parents registered my name to the school on 28th May 2010, the teachers explained to every parent that One Days Wages Organization would support the school transportation for a year (2010 – 2011). All students’ parents were pleased as soon as they heard the provision for the transportation. It made the woes of parents disappear.”

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our children’s education fund.
