Project #93 | Maternal Health and Education in Ghana
Our partnership with Ghana Health and Education Initiative
Malaria leads to low birth weight, which can cause up to 11% of neonatal deaths in some areas of Africa. High stillbirth and maternal death rates are ever-present in Ghana. Through our partnership with Ghana Health and Education Initiative, we supported their Mother Mentor Project, through which families were educated on malaria prevention and received insecticidal nets to improve the health and wellness of pregnant women.
This project had three objectives: to improve the overall nutrition of pregnant women, decrease the prevalence of malaria and diarrhea, and decrease overall maternal stress of the women in this Ghanaian community. By partnering each mother with an experienced mentor and by providing mothers with supplies that assisted them during pregnancy and childbirth, GHEI lessened the burden of pregnancy and improved the health of pregnant women and their children.
Our collective impact
Ruth is a first-time mother here in the community of Humjibre. She was one of the first pregnant women to sign up for the Mother Mentor Program and she was the first to give birth. She says her favorite part of the project was the additional nutritional supplementation she received throughout her pregnancy and the educational flip-charts and mentor home-visits.
First time mothers like Ruth are getting the best start for their babies through the guidance and support of the Mother Mentor Program. GHEI aims to help even more new mothers thrive in this rural Ghanaian community.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our maternal health fund.
