PROJECT #84

Project #84 | Transforming Communities with Nutrition in Vietnam

Our partnership with Catalyst Foundation

The Raglai are one of the most marginalized and poorest ethnic groups in Vietnam. The average Raglai family earns only a few pennies a day, and the children often miss school because their parents require them to stay and help provide for the family, which mostly consists of subsistence farming. Approximately 90 percent of Raglai children suffer from malnourishment and 78 percent do not have access to water for cooking, bathing, or drinking. The context of poverty, lack of education, and hunger creates a situation where the children are also vulnerable to human trafficking because traffickers will target these families and try to convince them that selling their children is in the best interest of the child.

ODW joined Catalyst in their holistic efforts to empower the most vulnerable members of the community: children. By investing in the Raglai children, we hope to ensure a strong future for this community by targeting root issues of poverty which limit further development and opportunities. This partnership supported efforts to improve the overall nutrition of this community through a nutrition program that aimed to decrease occurrences of preventable illnesses due to malnourishment and thus increase the quality of health by consistently providing enough food for families. This was achieved by developing a micro-garden seedling system, which allowed families to start and maintain organic gardens in their own homes. In addition, meals were provided at school for children both as a way of ensuring proper nutrition and encouraging school attendance.

Meet Lem

Before Catalyst Foundation “built the garden, community members only grew what they wanted for themselves. No one shared about what to grow, how hard it was, or if it was any good. Catalyst taught us to share. We did not know about other plants – what they tasted like, how to cook it (besides soup), and why it was good for us (nutritious). Knowing that we will have enough to eat every day allows me to worry less about how we will earn money.”

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our global hunger fund.
