PROJECT #67
Project #67 | Midwife Training in Guatemala
Our partnership with Wuqu’ Kawoq
Wuqu’ Kawoq works on health and clean water needs in Guatemala. They work with indigenous communities in central Guatemala, a country with a high maternal mortality rate of 120 per 100,000 live births. Wuqu’ Kawoq provides full service primary care in central Guatemala, with special expertise in the management of women’s health care, child malnutrition, and noncommunicable diseases.
Our partnership with Wuqu’ Kawoq provided 40 midwives with training for postpartum hemorrhage treatment. This treatment helped over 150 Guatemalan women in childbirth who, before this, faced high maternal mortality rates due to lack of access to quality care. The grant provided training, medication, and a tracking system to help the midwifes work effectively and efficiently.

Meet doña Flor
Doña Flor is a midwife who works in the extremely rural community of Pa Ch’abaq. She has worked as a midwife most of her life; her trade came to her by practical means, first delivering a sister-in-law’s baby by necessity, then another, and before she knew it, she was a midwife. She is the only midwife in her community after her older counterpart gradually retired. She is greatly trusted and respected amongst her peers, and participates on the Acotchi leadership committee. Doña Flor participated in the misoprostol for postpartum hemorrhage trainings, and was a ready source of referrals of patients with complex medical needs. When one of her patients delivered a baby with a cleft lip—making it impossible for her to form a good latch as she breastfed—doña Flor referred the patient and her baby to Wuqu’ Kawoq, where they received supplemental formula, help with pumping breastmilk, and a referral to a reputable organization for the infant’s surgery.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our maternal health fund.
