PROJECT #103
Project #103 | Health Savings Program in Mali
Our partnership with Mali Health
The Health Savings Program that we implemented with Mali Health functions as women gather and make small, weekly contributions to their respective savings group. These funds are made available as loans to women who need to pay for healthcare services. Mali’s decentralized healthcare system has health centers solely responsible for their own financial sustainability, so clinics usually implement a fee-for-service that has vital health services to be inaccessible for most lower-income Malians. Now with health loans readily available and accessible, the percentage of women who report seeking healthcare for themselves or their children within 24 hours of showing symptoms have risen from 20% to 65% and is expected to rise.
As of December 2017, 4,988 women are enrolled in 222 different savings groups and they have made over $20,000 available to help groups members pay for healthcare services. Throughout the year, 3,513 women borrowed money from their groups to pay for services at the health center, medications from the pharmacy, or hygiene products, such as soap or bleach. Ninety-nine percent of women reported that they have had access to sufficient funds from their savings group when they’ve sought a health loan.

Meet Korotoumou
Korotoumou Camara, 25, is the mother of six children and the treasurer of her savings group. She is usually busy selling vegetables at a nearby market, doing housework, and taking care of her children. As for her savings group, they meet weekly to give themselves and their families the opportunity to save for future needs. Before the group, Korotoumou and her husband used to be weary whenever one of their children fell ill because they were concerned about how they would pay for the visit. Now, with the option of being able to take a health loan from the savings group, they feel a sense of pride in being able to take charge of their family’s health. The collective nature of the savings group gives her confidence that her community cares and she can rest a little easier now in the security of her children’s health needs.
Thank you for making this possible!
Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.
If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our preventable disease fund.
