OUR APPROACH

in the fight to alleviate extreme poverty

this is why we exist

Globally, over 800 million people – 10% of the world’s population – experience extreme poverty, defined as living on less than $3.00 a day. Extreme poverty means lacking basic necessities for survival, including food, water, income, healthcare, and education. Leaders in these communities deeply understand the needs, but only about 5% of global development funding goes directly to local organizations.

in response to the challenge

this is what we do

One Day’s Wages exists to alleviate extreme poverty by investing in, amplifying, and coming alongside locally led organizations in underserved communities.

Invest In: We fund grassroots organizations implementing community-led solutions to extreme poverty.  We offer one-year grassroots grants for new partners, multi-year growth grants for past partners, and short-term emergency grants for partners responding to a crisis.

Amplify: We highlight our partners to expand their spheres of influence and elevate their expertise. We share about our partners through our website, social media channels, newsletters, and events.

Come Alongside: We regularly convene our partners for networking and capacity-sharing forums that center local expertise and contribute to mutual learning.  We offer webinars, panel discussions, newsletters, a resource library, and personalized support.

our long-term goal is

a more just and beautiful world

in which grassroots organizations have the financial resources,  confidence, and capacity to support flourishing communities.

our guiding principles

1

mutual partnerships

We value mutuality.  We see so much meaningful, community-driven work happening in the world.  That’s why we choose to work through partners instead of creating our own programs.  ODW’s approach to partnership is rooted in listening, solidarity, and mutual learning.

2

local solutions

We value locally led development. We believe local leaders best understand their communities’ needs, and community-led projects result in sustainable impact.  However, only 1.2% of humanitarian funding goes to local organizations.  ODW partners with grassroots organizations founded by and for members of underserved communities.

3

integrated interventions

We value impact.  We understand poverty as the lack of basic services.  Globally, 1.1 billion people experience three or more deprivations simultaneously.  To alleviate poverty, ODW invests in partnerships that improve income, food security, access to education, health care, and clean water.

4

reduced vulnerabilities

We value human dignity.  We acknowledge that some people and communities are especially vulnerable to extreme poverty, and that poverty exacerbates vulnerabilities.  In response, we prioritize programs that enhance social inclusion, climate resilience, refugee resilience, and trafficking prevention and recovery.

5

collective contributions

We value transparency.  ODW was founded on the idea that this work takes all of us.  Both donors and program participants can contribute their gifts — no matter how big or small — to impact global poverty.  We prioritize projects that leverage community-generated resources, and report back honestly on the impact of our collective contributions.
