Project #2 #3 #19 #36 | Earthquake and Hurricane Relief in Haiti

Our partnership with World Concern, Partners in Health, and Roots of Development

ODW provided medical care for the people affected by the earthquake and Hurricane Sandy which destroyed much of Haiti in 2010 and 2012. Our partnerships provided the people of Haiti with disaster assistance, clean water, and transitional shelters. We worked to provide jobs through a Cash for Work program and gave livelihood grants to get Haitian business owners back to work.

We partnered with 3 different organizations to provide disaster relief in Haiti. Partners in Health has been working on the ground in Haiti for over 20 years. Their mission is to bring modern medical care to poor communities in nine countries around the world, including Haiti. World Concern provides life, opportunity, and hope to suffering people around the world through disaster response and development programs. We also worked with Roots of Development to repair a crucial clean water facility badly damaged in the storm.

Meet Charles

Charles Jackson is HIV positive.  Last year, our partner World Concern helped get Charles training for operating heavy machinery. Our hope was that Charles would be able to use his new skills in the rebuilding efforts in Haiti. Charles, however, did far more. Instead of finding a job, he decided to help create jobs for others by starting his own training center, teaching others to operate heavy machinery. Charles has trained over 100 students, many of whom were then employed by construction companies working on projects like the airport repair and road construction.  He advertises on local radio stations, and employs a staff of seven.  He did all of this in just over one year since receiving the training.

Thank you for making this possible!

Our movement is grassroots, to us that not only means the work on the ground is led by local leaders with the support of the community, but it also means that we raise the funds for our projects through everyday donors just like you. In addition to all the donors that gave $25, $100, or $250 and the campaigners that ran a race or donated their birthday to raise funds, we also want to thank our generous business, school, and faith sponsors who believed in our work and joined the movement.

If you want to support future projects like this you can make a donation to our general fund.
